About the JRTCA

The JRTCA is the largest Jack Russell Terrier (a.k.a. Parson Jack Russell Terrier®) club and registry in the world; the JRTCA was founded to protect and preserve the unique characteristics and working heritage of this great little terrier, and remains dedicated to that purpose today. Please note that the JRTCA is NOT affiliated in any way with the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The Jack Russell is a lively, medium-sized dog, but is a highly-intelligent, highly energetic working terrier. A standard Jack Russell is a sturdy, tough terrier, that is very much on its toes all the time, and must measure between 10" and 15" at the withers to qualify for registration. The body length must be in proportion to the height, and it should present a compact, balanced image, always being in solid, hard condition.  Coat types may vary in the JRT breed from smooth to broken to rough.

BRIEF HISTORY of the breed

They were originally bred in the mid to late 1800's by Rev. John Russell of Devonshire England. Known for their exceptional hunting skills, Jack Russells are also tough, fearless, and unmerciful of their prey. They have wonderful temperaments, and make great family pets when properly cared for.

If you are considering the purchase of one of these exceptional dogs, it is very important to carefully consider whether you have the time and facilities to properly care for a Jack Russell Terrier. These dogs require plenty of daily exercise and outdoor activity. With sufficient exercise, the JRT makes an affectionate, loyal and well-behaved family pet, but cooped-up in an apartment by themselves, these terriers can become "terrors"! Don't buy a JRT on a whim, but if you have the time and facilities to devote, owning a Jack Russell Terrier can be the experience of a lifetime!
